How to Talk to Reporters

Help Reporters.

Reporters are not (usually) out to get us. If they are hurried and demanding, it is because they are busy and overworked. Our job is to make their jobs easier, so that they let us use their airwaves and newspapers to reach people with a message. This means being available to reporters on short notice, always returning phone calls quickly, being where we tell them we will be on time, and being reliable in our assertions. Never ever ever lie to a reporter, and don’t even exaggerate or say anything you’re not certain of. Say “I don’t know, but I’ll find out for you. What’s your deadline?”

Hooking a Reporter. What’s news?
• It’s already in the news.
• It’s new and unique.
• It’s a trend or pattern.
• It has conflict.
• David and Goliath.
• Localizing a national story and vice versa.
• Personalizing a story.
• Timeliness, calendar.
• Celebrity.
• Strange bedfellows.

Remember that they’re reporters.
Being helpful to a reporter does not mean being a reporter’s friend. Never tell a reporter anything “off the record.” Being helpful to a reporter does not mean caring what a reporter thinks. Never worry about pleasing or agreeing with the reporter. You are talking for the media audience, not the reporter. (But you should look at the reporter, not the camera.)

Principios Sobre Reporteros
